tell the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth

Story

When she told me her story, I was changed. I wished I had understood sooner. I would have extended more grace and reached out with a little more kindness had I known the ache behind the smile.

Who else is living sad behind their smile? Who else is wondering if life is still worth living? Who else is waiting for someone to love them?

Some people are desperately longing for someone they can trust. They’re wondering if anyone will ever care? They’re wondering if they’re the unique human that can’t feel the beauty of life and live it well. They believe they’re alone…until someone reaches out with tenderness.

Jesus saw the woman who had committed adultery and knew her story before she told Him. He acknowledged the choices she had made and where it had taken her. She couldn’t believe it. No one had ever seen the whole of her before and certainly hadn’t cared enough to look her in the eye and acknowledge her story.

With Purpose

Jesus knew the stories of each person present. He knew the sin in their own hearts and how they, too, each deserved to be stoned. They were hiding and Jesus knew that.

But they were waiting for his permission to stone the sinful woman. After writing quietly in the dust uncomfortably long, He gave them the permission. “Whoever has never sinned, throw the first stone!” Then He bowed His head and continued writing.

Jesus knew both sides of the story.

They knew they were caught. Jesus saw their hearts and they could no longer hide. One by one, they quietly turned and walked away. They must have felt such shame.

Now it was Jesus and the woman left in the middle of the crowd. After the accusers had left, Jesus stood and looked her in the eye. “Where are your accusers? Did they not condemn you?”

She affirmed to her Lord that they, indeed, had not.

Jesus next words to the sinful woman gave her whole entire story a redemptive purpose. “Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more.”

When Jesus breathes grace and purpose into our story, everything changes. This is how our stories become a part of His Greater Story of Redemption.

We’re all afraid of what He will do if He finds out. Will He walk away? Or will He turn, look me in the eye, and speak words of life over my existence?

The Miracle

Every person has a story that God wants to fit into His greater Story of Redemption. His Story is still unfolding and we are part of that. It is a vital time to share His Story with the world. Many people don’t know His Word and many are lost in the confusion of their own story. Is that person you?

I chose the word Story to be my guiding factor as I write. There is mysterious power in a well-written story. Mine are nothing of significance except for the empowering grace of God, and I want to share stories of His power with you. It is my desire that in sharing you will see Jesus at work and find fresh courage to walk hand in hand with Him in your story.

What is His purpose for you? What is His miracle in your life?
